Rating: Normal, lower-end Roman coffee, expected something better!
Sometimes a part of Rome’s charm comes from the fact that age gives beauty to some things. Shabby-chic was probably invented here. But with the Antico Caffè Greco, that’s unfortunately not the case. Let’s briefly see what’s going on here. Yes, I know this is Rome’s oldest establishment, from the 18th century supposedly. But I care about coffee and not about age here (and with coffee the two don’t mix anyway!).
Asking for a coffee gets you the following:
Presentation: Interesting, no water offered, but we get a nice cup that’s got the cafe’s logo on it. I had to ask for water, and got it in this nice ‘old looking’ cup. But fun.
Temperature of Cup: The cup was extremely hot, way to hot and it was a start of a not too pleasant coffee experience.
Quantity: While the cup was a bit too big for me, the size of the espresso was OK, it was about 1/3 of the cup so decent. Good.
Temperature: The espresso itself was also boiling, really too hot to have immediately. Had to wait for it to cool down.
Volume/Consistency: Here’s the interesting surprise, it was actually thick, and after it cooled down, a bit silky. There’s something definitely about the consistency of this coffee.
Crema: Quite thin, very dark which I liked, but it died out very quickly. The crema was very bitter.
Odor: There was very little fragrance to the espresso, but what I did notice was an over roasted bean. Very darkly roasted scent.
Taste: The taste was not rancid, so this is the most positive point. It was bitter, very bitter, strong, and definitely drinkable. No subtlety of flavors of any kind. Just straight-up darkly roasted beans.
Overall: Well, let’s put it this way: I don’t know how this place stayed in business for 300 years with this coffee. It was Ok, on the lower-end of espressos in Rome, and not remarkable. Go here for the ‘been-there, done-that’ factor, but not really to ‘enjoy’ an espresso. But maybe that’s what you’ll enjoy, the surroundings more than the drink?
The setup: I could not see what coffee they’re brewing but the machine they have, wow, beautiful! With this Victoria Arduino they should be squirting out golden espressos with every shot!
The interior is distinctive and gives for hanging out and enjoying your time away from the sun and crowds.
