BERNARDINI CAFFÈ, VIA MAURIZIO QUADRIO 36, 00152 ROMA

Rating: Standard, normal Roman coffee


The Bernardini Cafe, or Peppe cafe as it also called, is right off on the via Carini, and facing another cafe (Il Vascello). It looks very modern, has nice glass exterior and doubles as a gelateria (ice cream-parlor).

Asking for a cup of coffee gets you the following:​

​Presentation: No water offered, but given to other clients after they asked. The cup was labeled with the bar’s name, and it was clean. Nice shape, a little big.


Temperature of Cup: The cup was very very hot. I had to wait, as usual…


Quantity: Here’s another negative thing, to my taste, it was a very long espresso, in the cup it felt like a long doble espresso. Should have been shorter.


Temperature: Yikes! The coffee was still very warm. Had to drink it very carefully…


Volume/Consistency: Was watery as expected from the amount of coffee in the cup. No thickness to it, no consistency.


Crema: It had a light brown crema, reflective of the temperature, and as you can see…​

​it didn’t last very long in the cup.​


Odor: No real smell, other than very burtn coffee.


Taste: Strong, not bitter, nor rancid, actually an OK coffee.​

​Overall: Moving beyond the temperature and consistency of the coffee. It wasn’t actually bad. It was a bearable and part of the norm of coffee being served here in this area. It wasn’t that bad in comparison to its neighbor across the street.


The setup: Well… like in Sant’Eustachio the ‘works’ are kept top secret. Could not tell what it was…​

​Neither could I tell what coffee was being brewed…, so yet another lukewarm instance of this potentially very good coffee?

In the summer however, it’s probably better to have ice cream out on the small plaza that it fronts.​
