Rating: Standard, an ok version Roman coffee
Close to the Ottaviano metro stop is the Novecentotredici Caffè. Its space spills onto a busy avenue and its interior gives an impression of a clean, studied urban Roman coolness.
Asking for a cafe gets you the following:
Presentation: The cup shows that it’s Santos coffee being brewed here. We’ve encountered this various times before here. The glass of water was given after I asked for it. Not offered originally.
Temperature of Cup: It was almost too hot. It was very hot let’s say.
Quantity: It was a bit long shot. I like this coffee roaster, but the quantity felt like a double espresso for me.
Temperature: The coffee itself was decent. Given that I had to wait for the cup to cool down, this was a good thing.
Volume/Consistency: It was too watery, too much coffee and not thick enough.
Crema: It was interesting, dark, thick, it actually was nice! I guess the temperature didn’t kill it too much, after all.
Odor: No strong coffee odor, nor smells of anything else but darkly roasted coffee.
Taste: It was bitter, as expected, but not rancid. It was a strong coffee.
Overall: This wasn’t anything worth raving about. It was good, decent, and normal fare of Roman coffee. Given that Gran Caffè is served in lots of different places, I’ve had better version of it. So you won’t get terrible coffee, but definitely not something spectacular.
The setup: Quite simple and effective. The Santos coffee was being served out of this nice La Cimbali semiautomatic, the grinder was also a La Cimbali.
The staff was nice, and the place full of sweets and other great looking things.
