SE DICI BAR CAFFÈ, VIA OTTAVILLA 16, 00152 ROMA

Rating: Standard, decent Traditional North-Italian Coffee

Right of the Piazza Ottavilla, facing the three other bars is the Se Dici Bar, or as the sign states: 16 Bar (if you say sixteen in Italian, its almost the same sound as ‘it is said’ in Italian). I walk into the place and it’s packed inside. There’s a TV and chairs and people having their breakfasts. Its long narrow locale is always packed, students, older people, you have it- it’s there.

Asking for a cup of coffee get’s you this black beauty:

Here’s what the other side looked like:

Presentation: So I like the presentation, the cup is cool, sleek and we’re off to a good start. But, no water offered. Maybe because it’s too early in the day, maybe because they see I’m not a regular. But no other water cups were on the bar when I walked in so… and by the way, for those of you asking. The Cup was a proprietor cup made for the coffee roaster, their brand was imprinted on the bottom of the cup!

Temperature of Cup: Cup was way to too hot. I had to wait for it to cool down a bit.

Quantity: The espresso was on the short side, given the large size of the cup. So it’ was good.

Temperature: The espresso itself was on the very warm side as well, but I took a gulp and didn’t get burnt. We’re good.

Volume/Consistency: Here’s the nice part, while it was a bit on the long side, the espresso felt a bit silky, it felt it had consistency and volume. It was a good espresso!

Crema: This was very light, so I feel that he should have lowered the temperature and cut the espresso a bit more to have the crema a bit thicker and darker. It didn’t have much life to it after I began to drink it.

Odor: Not very fragrant, but a slight, ever so slight smell of coffee.

Taste: The taste was decent. It was very bitter. The first sensation coming into my mouth (after the fear of being scalded by the hotness of the coffee….) was of bitterness, deep bitterness. But thereafter I could taste some of the coffee, and it wasn’t rancid. I could savor it without a problem.

Overall: While not as good as the neighboring bars on the Piazza Ottavilla, it was a good espresso. It was to the point, good, and I feel a decent representation of Italian coffee.

The setup: They had a nice Faema Enova two-group semi-automatic, with a generic faema (probably) brand grinder for their regular coffee, and then a cool Mazzer straight-doser for decaf… when will bars realize to do the switch?? The coffee they were brewing was Caffè Vergnano 1882 a roaster working out of Santena, Torino. So northern Italian styled coffee. So this is what we have here being served. Not quite ‘true’ Roman.

And another thing: they have free WiFi here, so maybe that’s why all the students and older folk were sitting inside. But, it’s gotta be more than that, the locale is small, tight, but very inviting, so … worth a try.
