CANOVA CAFFÈ, PIAZZA DEL POPOLO 16, 00187 ROMA

Rating: Standard, decent Roman coffee

Canova Caffè is another one of those historic Roman cafes. On the Piazza del Popolo, it’s got an eternal flow of tourists. The clientele is secure, the quality is another story, one that we’ll discover here. You read reviews that it’s crazy good, and that it’s one of the best cafes in Rome. Again, what we have here is somebody (or lots of tourists) confusing great location with the quality of a coffee drink. Two different things, no? The cafe is all front, very little interior space for coffee. There’s a restaurant in the back.

Asking for a coffee gets you a comment saying that you have to pay first (of course, tourists can simply walk away). This is what you get when you pay your euro for your coffee:

Presentation: No water offered, of course not, tourists get the crap treatment most of the time here. Funny how some establishments don’t realize this is their source of income. But back to the story, what do we see? a clean cup, a clean spoon and …

Temperature of Cup: Quite hot but not scalding, we’re doing OK.

Quantity: A bit long in this cup size.

Temperature: Very good temperature! We’re doing good.

Volume/Consistency: Actually, here’s the nice surprise. It was silky, very silky. The temperature was on the spot so it added to the experience of this.

Crema: The crema was quite thin, and quite light. Here’s two different views as the lighting wasn’t the best.

So it didn’t remain long.

Odor: Not very strong, or at least not strong enough to make an impression very easily.

Taste: Here was the strong point. It was not a rancid coffee (which here in Rome you either get rancid or simply ultra bitter coffee). It was a decent coffee. The combination of consistency and temperature worked great for this drink.

Overall: The verdict? It was decent. It held up to quite a lot of other cafes in Rome. It is definitely not the best, nor even among the best, but it is quite decent and not a total disappointment. The most distinguishing aspect is the fact that it had some body to the espresso.

The setup is as follows: They had a Faema E71 Ambassador with some type of grinder that didn’t look like a Faema either.

The coffee being served is Caffè Trombetta a traditional Roman roaster that is located near the Termini station- so this is straight Roman-Roman authentic coffee.

And in my opinion, it’s a decent representation of Roma caffe. Bitter, nice body, and fortunately in this case, was at the right temperature.
