Rating: Poor, exceptionally horrible coffee
The Theatre Café is close to the heart of all of Rome’s most interesting ancient attractions, and sees tons of traffic from people wanting to rest and enjoy the Roman afternoon and evening. Its interior resembles more an Irish pub than anything else, but its locale is cool and in a prime spot. Lots of car traffic in the front, but that’s downtown for you.
But let’s see what we get when we order a coffe:
Presentation: Since this place really isn’t like a normal Roman Cafe where you have a long bar to stand and have coffe at, the cup was placed on a small slab of wood where beers are normally served. No water was offered, and wasn’t too comfortable to drink.
Temperature of Cup: Scalding hot cup, way too hot. First major problem, I couldn’t even pick up the damned thing!
Quantity: The size of the espresso was great in my opinion, the cup is formed so that it’s not easy to over do it. Good point here.
Temperature: Super hot, terribly terribly hot. Problem no. 2
Volume/Consistency: Dirty water, simply watery.
Crema: Paper thin, and reminds me of the veneer in Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, just for show, no content.
Here you can see it in decay after my first tentative sip.
Odor: Well, if we can call the odor or aroma that bitter smell of charred beans then just a slight elegant hint of it.
Taste: This was the worst part of the whole experience, after giving the poor espresso a shot, and let it cool down, the thing was absolute rancid and pure death.
Overall: Let’s say that I gave it a try, a real honest effort to finish this horrible coffee but I couldn’t muster the guts to ruin my stomach for the rest of the day. Absolutely undrinkable. I had to leave the cup unfinished. What a waste of one euro.
Here’s their setup.
Not bad if you ask me. I won’t say anything more about it because whoever is in charge of ordering beans there obviously doesn’t care how the hell it’s served, nor if any of the thousands of monthly tourists will ever come back. I asked the barista what beans they brew and he proudly said “Marziali”, we’ve seen this brewed elsewhere. Actually in Bud Cafe 8 which did an absolutely spectacular job on their espressos! You be the judge of what’s wrong with this coffee setup…
