POERIO CAFFÈ, VIA ALESSANDRO POERIO 10/A, 00152 ROMA

Rating: Standard, ok version of illy coffee being served

Here’s a nice bar in a quiet neighborhood and always packed with lots of additional seasonal sweets and pastries. Its a family affair, as most smaller bars are, so you’ll get treated nicely. And there’s always at least a few souls lingering on the patio chairs so its a welcoming place.

Asking for a coffee got me this colorful surprise:

Presentation: Nice, a clean cup, quite large and round, but fun and happy. The glass of water was there immediately. We’re off to a good start!

Temperature of Cup: Great, on the spot and not too hot, nor too cold.

Quantity: I like the brevity of the shot, very short for this size of cup. So I’m happy.

Temperature: A bit on the warm side.

Volume/Consistency: Sirupy, dense. This is all start espresso and it shows.

Crema: Along with this, was the very dark crema and the brevity of its existence. This was essentially half a shot so not much crema was able to get into the cup.

Odor: Not much odor. I can live with it given the above.

Taste: Very bitter, not rancid. Very strong, no hints of any kind of fruits or alternative taste universes here!

Overall: So this is a decent ‘Illy’ coffee espresso. It was good, because of the almost ristretto feel of the shot, it turned out to be surprisingly balanced.

The setup: It was OK, they had a newer LaCimbali three-group semiautomatic and Cimbali brand grinder. So either they set this up correctly, or we have the nice case of the barista/owner having an eye for brewing ‘illy’ coffee, and serving a good espresso. When I can, I’ll stop by again.
