CONCA D’ORO CAFFÈ, VIALE AMERICA 25/27/29, 00144 ROMA

Rating: Poor, boiling hot burnt espresso

Here’s another flashy place at the EUR complex. The Conca d’Oro Bar and Cafe is a place where you go if you have too much extra change in your pocket and want something classy to spend it on. Let’s see what they offer.

Asking for a coffee gets you the following (Here taken at the terrace in the evening).

Presentation: The cup came with a glass of water, good! Two sugars to boot (raw and normal), and a nice fluted cup.

Temperature of Cup: Ouch! The cup was ultra hot, I think that these EUR cafes have something about scalding hot cups! Palombini around the corner, and another bar nearby suffer the same problem!

Quantity: I liked the fact that the shot was very short, yet I was skeptical because of the cup.

Temperature: Yikes! The coffee itself was super hot as well… going south very quickly.

Volume/Consistency: Yup, south its arrived, watery cup, somehow, so short, yet so watery…

Crema: It was very dark, and didn’t remain for long… was very thin.

Odor: The smell was very dark, very burnt, reflective of the temperature and of the charred beans.

Taste: Very burnt, and rancid taste. I had ample time to finish it, and I did, but it was close to simply too bitter to finish.

Overall: I think this was too expensive (2 euros) and too bitter and rancid to merit anything but ‘poor’. The bar is really cool, classy and as the photos will show, plenty of amazing sweet things. We could imagine that the coffee is so bitter because there’s simply so many sweets being served! But, still, for a joint exuding this class and status, it should be serving something a bit more carefully thought out.

The setup: They have quite an impressive setup, two Rancilio machines, a nice Mazzor Major and another for the decaf coffee. The bar apparently is brewing Gima Caffè … something we saw in another bar reviewed here.

For all intents and purposes, this place offers some beautiful – really beautiful pastries, cakes and sweets. It’s a pity, a real pity, that the coffee is so poor. But maybe they’ll change management and improve it, or have a barista that is keen on seeing things improve.
