PUNT’ACCAPO CAFFÈ, VIALE DEI QUATTRO VENTI 174, 00152 ROMA

Rating: Standard, decent Adriatic style (Pescara) coffee in Rome

I ran into this place almost by mistake, the Caffè Punt’Accapo is unassuming, on a corner, and on a busy thorough fare. Yet inside it is surprisingly spacious, and in the evenings turns into a bar-lounge space. A thing lots of bars do here in Rome to make ends meet.I had a bit of a problem finding out what the name of the bar is, as its written in chalk on a chalkboard to the left of the entrance. Yet, what stands out as most distinguishing is its bright lit-up coffee advert that they display to the right of the door.

With this much importance given to the coffee, I thought I’d give it a try. Asking for a caffè gets you this:

Presentation: No water offered, but the barista seemed happy to oblige if I were to ask. The cup was clean, and the size was just right.

Temperature of Cup: Temperature was good. It was possible to put it to my lips without being burnt.

Quantity: The shot was good, it was short, and in this size cup, a little longer than a ristretto. I like this.

Temperature: Almost spot-on. And this is important because the cafe was empty when I arrived, and it was in the later afternoon. So the machine was sitting there without being flushed for a while, and the boiler probably on the higher end of the temperature.

Volume/Consistency: A bit thin for my liking. And it seems that it was too hot for this coffee after all…

Crema: Here’s the thing, the grinds weren’t really tuned to the temperature. The crema was quite thin, and very blond. This shot should have been a short short ristretto. The barista should have probably given the group a flush before serving the coffee.

Odor: Dark coffee, dark roast, but strong. Not overly strong, so nice surprise.

Taste: Some good, some bad points so far, but the taste was decent. It was good. It wasn’t rancid, not overly watery, but strong and bitter. It would have been golden as a macchiato!

Overall: For the nonchalance nature of the place, its lack of outrageous signage on the street, it’s a nice surprise, and a decent coffee. When passing by, I’ll stop in again!

The setup: The thing that drew my attention was the Saquella Caffè coffee sign on the outside. These roasters are an Adriatic coast company, situated in Pescara. If we remember, there are some other cafes reviewed here that roast coffee from nearby Chieta. This bar is definitely better. The machine they were using was a semi-automatic Wega, and the beans ground directly from the hopper placed directly into the Mazzer grinder a-la ‘illy’ cafe. So with some fine tuning, this should be spitting out quite nice espressos.

On the front you can see an aperitivo menu… the local was nice, clean, a bit upscale, a cool place.
