Rating: Standard, decent Traditional Roman coffee
The Bar Glorioso is a small, nice place situated a block away from the Viale Trastevere, and behind the Ministry of Instruction, thus it gets lots of traffic from some very nicely dressed bureaucrats. It’s worth stopping by just for this.
The owner is a very nice guy who’s willing to listen and talk when needed.
When you ask for a coffee this is what you get:
Presentation: Very short fluted cup, with a very short espresso. I like these cups. No water offered, but he will give it to you if you ask.
Temperature of Cup: Right on the mark. Warm but not scalding.
Quantity: Very short shot, I like this, a very controlled explosion of taste.
Temperature: The espresso however was a bit too hot, on the too warm side. I had to wait a bit for it to cool down before I could drink it.
Volume/Consistency: Quite nice. It was not sirupy, nor too diluted. It was good.
Crema: I had two espressos, because the barista/owner took my cup away before I could shoot the last photo! So, the crema on the 1st espresso (pictured below) was a bit darker, and thicker. It remained for the duration of the espresso and was not too thin. Temperature however was high.
Odor: Strong dark odor of coffee, not too aromatic actually. Sharp, not charred, but strong.
Taste: The taste is what we expect out of Roman coffee- very strong stout and bitter. This was all that, and not rancid, which is a nice touch. However, this is bordering on that side, it’s quite a strong punch.
Overall: The above picture is of the 2nd espresso I had. Without the qualities we’re looking for in this blog (i.e. an artisan roasted espresso shot) this is still a good coffee. Enjoyed having 2 shots there one after the other. This coffee represents what a decent mid-range espresso in Rome should be. Definitely better than other Trastevere locals, and I would, and when I can, I do, return here for coffee. It has free Wi-Fi so that also is a nice incentive. The few pastries and tramezzini available are good too!
The secret to the density and thickness of taste to the espresso is with the classic E61 group head he’s using. Here he has a very nice 3 group Wega espresso machine. Simplicity and functionality at its highest form.
The coffee he roasts is the Marziali caffè, which we’ve seen here before, and which tends to be super bitter. So I would say this is a very good incarnation of this coffee. The barista went so far as to buy the cups with the logo, so he’s obviously a fan.
Here’s a view to the interior. Nothing fancy, but between the folks from the Ministry and the 16-year old Italian students from the institutes nearby, it does the job. The owner doesn’t mind if you sit there with your laptop for a few hours, so it’s a nice place to be at.
These guys think so too!
